Foundation Diploma Art, Design & Media

For my Final Major Project (FMP), I had originally planned on making Homeware objects which were to be designed for functional purposes and be used around the house. I wanted to derail from the mundane objects and for the focus to be on an object that can translate an experience where it is not just for aesthetics but rather a sensory layer.
As the week's went by, I started getting different ideas on what I could base it on i.e., whether I wanted my pieces to be functional and be used at home or be unfunctional and make it as exhibition pieces. I drew a lot of inspiration from the Wabi Sabi culture which is appreciating beauty that is imperfect and incomplete. I also got my inspiration from Kintsugi which is the Japanese art of repairing broken pieces of homeware with gold or silver lacquer.
I also looked into my cultural heritage and explored different aspects of the homeware pieces. For example, how it was formed from clay and what they were used for as majority of the pieces were made solely for functionality. There are pieces decorated around my house from Somalia which all have different purposes from a bell made of wood for camels' necks or a winnowing basket to separate grain or rice etc. Looking into my culture has also led me to delve into culture's from outside of my scope as Africa is known for its widely diverse cultures.
