Emma Appleby

BA (Hons) Fine Art

Since my work revolves around the spectator experiencing my sculptures through their senses, I wanted to create an interactive sculpture that hints towards the human form. The purpose of this is to create a more intimate relationship between the sculpture and spectator.

Emma Appleby is a Midlands-based artist exploring how we negotiate art through our senses. Her practice revolves around the idea of sensory association with an emphasis on sensory perception to the spectator experiencing a piece of work. We must experience a piece of artwork not only visually but also through all our senses; the use of colour and textures plays a massive role in portraying this. Key themes she has been researching and exploring include synesthesia, a condition where sensory connections become confused or crossed over. For example, someone may see sounds through visualising colours or smell/taste a colour.
Through sculpture, Emma attempts to physically create these sensations' visualisations to engage the spectator not only visually but phenomenologically. The spectator actively becomes a participant within my work and is fundamentally part of the work itself.
After graduating, Emma is moving on to study for a MA in Arts and Project Management at Birmingham City University.
