I am a passionate English student, working towards a career in advertising and marketing. English has always been fascinating to me and the process of writing this short story felt like an outlet for the skills I have gained throughout my degree. Initially out of my comfort zone, the thought of creative writing was a daunting one. However, after reading William Morris' 'News from Nowhere' I fell in love with the possibility of creating my own individual utopian world. Drawing on Morris' utopian novel, 'Empath' discusses feminism and socialism, as well as possible criticisms of Utopian literature. With an arguably unlikeable protagonist and stubborn love interest, this short story presents and enchanting version of society resonating with Medieval England. One may ask: What happens when an outsider steps foot into a seemingly perfect version of reality? 'Empath' will allow you to enter a world that makes you question your own ideals and hopefully, entices you to think about change.
