Sam Richards

BA (Hons) Illustration and Animation

Hello! My name is Sam Richards and I'm a traditional Illustrator from South East London who uses pen, pencil and ink to create humorous illustrations. When I was younger I always wanted to be a marine biologist, however after finding an affinity for drawing I never looked back and now find myself fully invested into the creative world. In my third year I have developed my own visual language that has seen my confidence and comfort with my work grow exponentially. Through my dissertation I found that my work is heavily suited to the book illustration industry, with the likes of Andy Riley and Tom Gauld becoming great influences on my work. I see myself as a very unserious person, always looking for the next joke to make and I am trying to carry this through to my illustrative work.
Whilst I started my career with portraiture, I have now transferred my drawing abilities to the more commercial area of book illustration where I am now relishing each opportunity to create a surreal piece of work. In my Final Major Project I created a series of ridiculous food puns that translate my own unique humour onto the page.
