Pak Ling So

BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design

I am Pak Ling So, with nickname Katrina, is a passionate girl from Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is a city with multi-culture that always stimulates my creativity and imagination. When I was a child, drawing and painting was a way to express my feelings towards life. When I was a student, there are lots of idea come out from my mind and it is a great pleasure to present the ideas into several art pieces. When I was an Interior Assistant in Hong Kong for a year, I worked on concept and project development, creating working drawings and specification, and dealing with suppliers. I believe my previous industry experience would be valuable to my future career. After I went back to university to deepen my thoughts and imagination, now I am well-equipped for more challenges.

I always travel alone to different cities to gain inspirations, which motivates me to learn new languages and now I am confident as a multilingual speaker. These experiences also turn me to be an independent girl and develop communication skills. I am confident to work with colleagues together to maintain a positive and welcoming working environment and bringing meaningful experiences for clients in the future.

"Nothing is pleasanter than exploring a library." (WALTER SAVAGE LANDOR N.D.)

As the handicraft industry is growing rapidly, it is important to have a space for craft lovers to gather. The project aims to convert the existing Whitechapel Bell Foundry into a multi-purpose library to serve the community as an informative and experiential centre.

In order to retain the value of a Grade II* Listed building, the project will preserve historical features to showcase bell manufacturing in the past, at the same time it should be able to present core value of the newly developed handicraft industry to the public.
Customised Staircase - It is designed with industrial theme and contemporary rustic elements, which is a distinctive piece in the main building. Using mild steel for spines and balustrade, treads are made of hardwood to show contrast and bringing warmth to design. Acrylic lightboxes are inserted in between two treads to make the design being stand out from typical staircase and adding modernised element to the piece.
Customised Pendant - It is deisgned in an abstract form of bell shape, which is hanging below the platform to relate the library design to bell foundry's history. It used gun metal as finish to give out a rough but modernised feeling.
Material Library - Combining technology and physicality, visitors can use the interactive panels to search for materials' information, including characteristics, history, place of origin etc., drawers are connected to system and will pop-up once the user choose the material on the screen, therefore people can feel the material and have a better understanding on it.
Woodwork Workspace - A space is designated to woodwork craft makers to focus on producing wood artworks. Original structures of Historic Foundry are kept to present the historical value of building, so renovation will be taken place instead of demolition.
Outdoor Garden - Visitors are welcomed to read books or have food in the garden while looking at the beautiful artworks on top. Also, due to the pandemic of Covid, designs are implied to encourage visitors to go out from indoor spaces in the Post-Covid world.
