User-centric. Thought-provoking. Sustainable. These are the three pillars in which I build my design philosophy around, ensuring a holistic and meaningful approach to the product design landscape.
Hi, I am Andrew Bubb, a Coventry University student with placement experience and I'm very proud and excited to share with you my degree show entry: Lumo, a duo of products aimed at tackling Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Sereno and Hex were born out of the below-standard existing products for those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, which I have identified as being bulky, overly medical, expensive, and ultimately do not put the user-needs first. S.A.D is caused by a lack of sunlight, which then negatively affects the hypothalamus in the brain, resulting in the reduction of Serotonin and Melatonin, potentially leading to depression.
As per the brief, the aim of the products was to ensure user's engaged in Light Therapy, an NHS approved treatment for S.A.D, whilst being able to go about their daily routines unhindered, something that the existing bulky products don't adhere to.
I'm hoping that my passion for design and creating products for those whose voices aren't heard shines through in this project. Enjoy!
Deriving from serenity and calmness, sereno encapsulates the product's emotional value to the user. A slow, calming wake up call to the sound of the soft waves lapping on the sandy shore, combined with the gentle, progressive light illuminating over time to echo the morning sun ensures the user wakes in total serenity - ready and motivated for the day ahead.
