Serena Springer
Sociology

I am a mature, Bachelor of Arts Sociology student currently graduating from university with five years of previous retail and hospitality experience. I am currently looking for work in the charity sector to work with disadvantaged children and young people. I am enthusiastic about working with children and young people, especially from the black, LGBTQ+ community because I wish someone was there to guide me when I was growing up. I completed my dissertation on the topic of black, LGBTQ+ homeless youth and how they are more at risk to become homeless and have different experiences compared to non-minority youth. I decided to research this topic because due to being a black woman from the LGBTQ+ community, I wanted to understand on a deeper level how race and sexuality can affect a young person's life growing up. Being a mature student, I have been able to explore and try new things prior to university such as hiking, snorkelling, surfing and pole dancing. I am currently learning how to roller skate and in my spare time I like to ride my bike and go to the gym. I also love to travel and explore new cities in and outside the UK.
